Best Plus Size Yoga Pants
Can you imagine going to a yoga studio in anything but spandex clothing? Yoga and leggings go hand in hand these days. Some studios will even STRESS that clothes need to be tight fitting so the teacher can “accurately” assess posture during class. To which I counter, a teacher cannot visually assess what you are physically feeling, which is why I prefer to cue based on muscle engagement, breathing ease, and stability. Just a little aside from me :)
My first answer when someone asks what kind of clothes they need for yoga is “anything you can move comfortably in!” Spandex is not traditional, shockingly enough! Even just a few decades ago most yoga was practiced in natural fibers and loose shapes. One of my favorite teachers practices in a tunic and loose pants. I’ve even taught a few seated classes in jeans! Whatever you feel comfortable in is my recommendation. That being said, I know how hard it is to find athletic wear for plus size bodies, so here are a few tried and true options. My two criteria - are they opaque when I bend over, and do they stay in place around the waist? None of these are sponsored, but these are all places where I have personally bought athletic wear!
Athletic Works Women's Plus Dri More Core Athleisure Bootcut Yoga Pants
No need to break the bank when it comes to yoga pants. These might not last through heavy use, but if you need an affordable, comfortable pair of yoga pants ASAP, Athletic Works from Walmart carries a variety of leggings, shorts, and pants up to a size 5X (model here is wearing a 4X with a 64” hip).
Old Navy Extra High-Waisted PowerSoft Flare Leggings
Clothes at Old Navy seem to be perpetually on sale, so while these are listed as full price $44.99, they’re currently available for 60% off. Extra high waist and lightly compressive fabric can help ensure that pants aren’t slipping and sliding as you walk around. Much of Old Navy’s athletic wear goes up to 4X / 28-30, a 63.5” hip per their size chart.
Superfit Hero Pocket Flare Leggings
If you’re looking for an investment piece, Superfit Hero is a small business that specializes in plus size active wear. I’ve worn a few of their leggings for over 5 years, and they really do hold up to regular use! They also have an incredibly inclusive size range, offering up to a 7X - thats a up to a 90” hip. The model here is wearing a 3X with a 59.5” waist. The materials are high quality and definitely pass the “bend and slip” criterias.
Universal Standard Next-to-Naked Bodysuit
It’s the priciest option on this list, but it also comes with a built in top! I love the bodysuits from Universal Standard. I can confidently say I’ve been wearing the same one for 150+ wears - lifting at the gym, teaching / practicing yoga, hiking and camping, and also when traveling. Have I mentioned I hate slippy waistbands? The bodysuit eliminates slippy waists and droopy bottoms completely. US often has sales, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out - that’s how I snagged mine at 50% off. US also has an excellent size range; the model here is pictured in the max size, 4XL / 80” hip.
